This September, D-Gallerie is proud to present Cool Vibes Only, a solo exhibition by Felix Burgos, an emerging New York artist whose work blends bold geometry, crisp lines, and sun-soaked palettes. Opening September 12, 2025, at our St. Petersburg art gallery, the exhibition invites viewers into tranquil retreats where palm trees, pastel walls, and pristine pools capture the essence of an endless summer.

To celebrate the upcoming show, we sat down for a Q&A with Artist Felix Burgos, who shared insights about his journey, inspirations, and the vision behind his distinctive style.

Q&A with Felix Burgos

Where are you from originally and where are you located now?

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Williamsburg. My mom and dad are both from Puerto Rico and migrated to New York in the 1940s.

What first inspired you to pursue a career as an artist?

My mother’s two brothers were talented artists. One attended Pratt Institute in New York and was hired by a prestigious Madison Avenue ad agency. I pursued art with the same goal in mind — “Wow, I can actually earn a living doing something I truly love doing.”

How would you describe your artistic style and how has it evolved over time?

Like many artists, I struggled for years to find my voice. Eventually, I embraced what had always come naturally to me as an art director: a bold, graphic approach. This style allowed me to develop a unique and impactful identity in my work, which now blends abstract expressionism with precise hard-edge painting.

How does your personal life and experiences shape the art you create?

After over 40 years in the advertising industry, often under intense pressure, I turned to art as a form of escape. It became my solace, a place of peace and tranquility. That sense of calm is what I now try to express in every piece I create.

What does a typical day in your studio look like?

I split my time between conceptualizing new pieces and painting on canvas. I often use Photoshop to sketch and plan layouts before committing to materials. This saves time and resources while refining the design. And of course, music always plays in the background.

How do you overcome creative blocks?

If it’s not coming to you, step away. Visit a gallery opening, fair, or immerse yourself with other artists. Inspiration always comes back after a reset.

Who are some artists or movements that have influenced your work?

Bauhaus design, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Hopper, and the great Mexican architect Luis Barragán.

What advice would you give to your younger self as an artist?

I started painting in my 60s and sometimes wish I had started sooner. For a long time, I didn’t believe anyone would be interested in my art. But they were. What a shock and thrill.

Create anyway. Don’t wait for perfection. The moment your work connects with someone, that’s your affirmation.

What is your goal as an artist?

My goals are simple: earn enough to keep going as an artist and bring a sense of beauty, joy, or peace into as many homes as possible.

What do you hope people feel when they view your artwork?

My art is part of who I am. When you bring my work into your home, it becomes part of your world too. I hope it brings a smile, a sense of joy, and a touch of peace every time you see it.
