Biography

Yuliya-martynova-artist.webp

Yuliya is a multidisciplinary painter born (1980) in Kazakhstan who has been living in the UK in the past 20 years. Born in a family of engineers, she grew up in the oily town of Aktau on the shores of the Caspian sea where landscapes are akin to Texan desserts.

As a child, she was taught classical arts and later trained as a lawyer in prestigious schools both in Kazakhstan and the UK, then worked in oil and gas in Aberdeenshire and London.  She felt her career was meaningless  as she moved from oil in gas to wealth management after the collapse of oil markets in 2008 and in 2015 Yuliya gave up her job to seek fulfilment as

as a full time artist.

Hard working and aspirational, she was immediately rewarded by attention of the online art platforms curators and built relationships with  few contemporary art galleries in London and now in Great Tampa Bay Florida, US.

She has recently held her large solo show in River & Rowing Museum of Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire and has been recognized as a well sold artist in many UK art fairs.

For many years she lived in London and was part of Wimbledon Art Studios cohort of contemporary artists, but since she became a mother in 2020, the family moved to the leafy countryside of Berkshire.

As she experiments with various media, she stays loyal to her ethereal execution where light emotion of hope with notes of nostalgic blues dominates her coastal, floral and cloudy dreamscapes. Yuliya’s most minimalistic dreamscapes always have dynamic elements highlighting artist restless and adventurous nature.

Her work has appeared in major movie sets like Marvel's Doctor Strange (2016), ABC's Scandal (2017), and will be featured in BBC drama (Wild Berry, 2025).

Yuliya’s art has been a feature in exclusive London and Berkshire clubs and fine dining lounges (amongst others - Amelie Motcomb St, Bingham of Richmond, Thames Lido, Black Radish), international luxury hotels (Hyatt Aviara, The Breakers, Timbers Kauai, many more), was part of special window dressing for Huntsman (2024), private welfare facilities in the US and in many private collections.

La Femme Nuage - Narrative

The series release coincides with Yuliya’s 10 years anniversary as a full time artist.

Over the past decade, dramatic sky formations have been a continuous source of inspiration shaping her palette and signature style. Weaving the visual narrative between opulence and deliberate scarcity into canvased realms.

In this latest iteration the artist attempts to capture ethereal cloud display with her quick petal-like brushstroke, drawing parallels between fast lived female beauty and rapidly changing clouds, confronting the impermanence of fading grace while reconciling her own aging.

PROCESS:

This is a fast paced, highly intuitive, creative process where the artist relies on her memory rather than photographs or sketches to create her signature petal like feathery cloud shapes.

The canvas is primed with lightly fluorescent coloured primer to give perfect permeability and tooth.

Then the initial artwork can be created in a matter of hours as the runny pigment needs to be placed in position quickly before it’s left to dry overnight. More often than not, Yuliya grows dissatisfied with her creations and destroys the artwork, taking it back to blank canvas with the layers of acrylic primer.

The process keeps being repeated until the artwork is found to be balanced in shape, colour and composition.
