Meet Margaret Juul: Coastal Waterscapes That Calm a Room

Margaret Juul paints the ocean, but not the way you’d expect. No horizons, no beaches. Her paintings are the water itself: the blues and silvers, the light moving just under the surface. Collectors tell her the work “breathes coherence” into a room, and that’s about right. We’re glad to have her at D-Gallerie.

The light under the water
When Margaret was four, a riptide pulled her under at Miami Beach. What she remembers isn’t the fear. It’s the light, sun breaking through the surface above her. She got out. The image stayed with her. Years later it became her Organic Coastal Waterscape Series, and she has been painting that same light ever since.
Thirty years in art before her own
Margaret came to painting the long way. She spent more than three decades as an art buyer, gallery manager, and interior designer before going full-time on her own work in 2014. It shows. She knows how a painting behaves in a real room, not just on a gallery wall.
Then in 2011, a workplace accident crushed her hands and wrists. Doctors doubted she would paint again. She used the work itself to recover and proved them wrong. You can feel it in the paintings: soft water on the surface, real strength underneath.
Vogue, Yoko Ono, and a lobby in San Diego
Her record is not a quiet one. British Vogue has featured her across three issues. She has passed a million dollars in print sales. She exhibited with Yoko Ono in the ARISING shows in Iceland and Montreal, and represented American artists at an exhibition at the Iraq Museum in Baghdad.
Her paintings hang in private homes, corporate lobbies, and hotels from London to Beijing, including Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the lobby of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego. She shows internationally, from Art Expo Paris to galleries in Dubai and Amsterdam. Her studio, though, is right here in St. Petersburg.
Painting with a purpose
The calm you feel in front of her work is on purpose. Margaret is a certified arts therapy coach with Reiki training, and she paints to do a job: settle a room, take the edge off a long day, bring a little of the water’s rhythm indoors.
